Licensed marriage and family therapist

Therapy for new parents in the first year, in San Francisco and by video.

Bridgette sees new parents one at a time, and partners in their own sessions or together. What she has learned is that people in the first year usually need to be listened to before they need advice.

Why Unfurl

I started Unfurl for parents in the first year. Most of the people I see are tired in a way sleep does not fix, and are surprised by it. They love the baby and still miss who they were, and both can be true in this room.

My work is mostly conversation, with attention to sleep, to the body, and to the people around you. I am not in a hurry, and I do not think you should be either.

When I'm not in session, you'll find me hiking the Marin Headlands, reading poetry, or attempting (badly) to grow tomatoes on my fire escape.

“Becoming a parent does not mean becoming someone new. It is learning who you are with a baby in your arms.”

HOW WE WORK

What sessions are like

Mostly conversation, at your pace, and around the baby.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Listening first

You can say the thing you have not said to anyone. There is no right way to feel in the first year, and nobody here is grading you.

  2. 02

Step 2: Sleep and the body

Tiredness, feeding and the body after birth are part of the conversation. We notice what happens in you when something important comes up.

  3. 03

Step 3: The people around you

Partners, parents, friends and the ones who are not helping. We look at who is there and who you wish was.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Small, practical steps

Between sessions you may try one small thing: an hour for yourself, a different handover at night. You decide what is realistic.

What guides the work

The relationship between the two of us carries the work. Everything else follows from it.

  • Relational

The work happens in connection, not in isolation.

  • Embodied

We work with the whole of you, mind and body.

  • Paced

We move at the speed of trust, never faster.
